In 2004, Emily took a departure from her prolific career in series television to fulfill her dream and wrote, produced and directed the indie film NOVEL ROMANCE, a quirky, character driven, romantic comedy that stars Traci Lords, Paul Johansson, Sherilyn Fenn and Mariette Hartley. Set in Venice, California, the film is about an unlikely love story between a workaholic magazine editor and a struggling, womanizing writer. Intelligently written and directed, the film offers up great nuance in the characters and relationships they have with one another. NOVEL ROMANCE has spent the past eight months traveling on the festival circuit domestically and abroad, and was recently featured in the prestigious New Filmmaker’s Series in New York City. It also just completed a limited theatrical run in Santa Monica, California.
After graduating from Columbia University with a degree in English Literature, Emily decided to move across the country to pursue a career in film. A blessedly short time after arriving, she was offered the opportunity to work as an assistant to a writer-producer working in television. After an intense education in the dynamics of network series development and production, she landed her first writing job on a short-lived CBS drama and quickly moved up from there.
Thriving on TV production’s fast pace and known for writing strong, three-dimensional characters and spirited banter, Emily rose through the writer/producer ranks on several episodic shows, among them: Gene Roddenberry’s sci-fi adventure ANDROMEDA, Rockne O’Bannon’s critically acclaimed FARSCAPE, the globally beloved mythical epic XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS, and the cop/beach hybrid PACIFIC BLUE. She came within reach of her filmmaking dreams when she received the opportunity to direct a few episodes of PACIFIC BLUE. Emily’s comfort working with the tight budgets and even tighter shooting schedules of syndicated series, along with excelling in the often brutal speed of writing and story development, ultimately drove her ascendance to Supervising Producer and Executive Consultant.
Fortunate to have worked consistently since her career began, Emily did what many considered insane and voluntarily took a potentially permanent hiatus from television. Ironically, while writing the script for NOVEL ROMANCE, which centers around a driven career woman’s unorthodox pursuit to become pregnant, Emily also became pregnant with her first child. Clearly fate must have been telling her something, because after a few years spent honing the screenplay and raising financing, Emily found herself nearly nine months pregnant with her second child as she actually shot the film.
With the July 31st DVD release of NOVEL ROMANCE, her first cinematic “baby” has grown up, and Emily now prepares to move into the next phase of her career as a writer and director. She is currently at work both pitching and writing new features, while reading scripts by others with an eye towards possibly directing them.
